Ensuring adequate preparation and appropriate facilities allows us to perform to the highest professional standard
A level, firm surface suitable for standing the horse and trotting it in hand for assessment.
If your horse is stabled at a livery yard, training centre, or similar facility, it’s important to pre-book the arena or ménage ahead of a saddle fitting appointment. Allow extra time rather than risk running short. Make sure the arena is available, clean, and in good working condition before the session begins to ensure everything runs smoothly.
Planning to jump in your new saddle? Make sure a few fences are ready to ride over before your fitting appointment. If you're choosing a saddle for dressage, polo, or showing, jumping won’t be relevant—but if jumping is part of your routine, having fences set up in advance helps us make the most of your session and avoids delays.
The rider’s presence is a vital part of any saddle fitting. Occasionally, horses are shared or ridden by more than one person. In these cases, all regular riders should attend the fitting. We will always prioritise the horse’s needs first, followed by the larger or taller rider if compromises are required. We may carry out a static fitting (without the rider mounted) in certain circumstances, but this only provides a limited assessment. A follow-up session with the rider on board is essential to confirm the saddle’s suitability in motion
To get the most out of your saddle fitting, please come dressed to ride. Jeans and trainers aren’t ideal—they’re uncomfortable in the saddle and don’t allow for proper assessment.
For your safety, we also follow the Society of Master Saddlers’ guidance: a correctly fitted riding hat should be worn during all fittings
A well-fitting saddle should sit comfortably on the horse without the need for extra padding—except, perhaps, a thin saddle cloth. That said, there are times when a numnah or gel pad may be appropriate. If so, we will need to factor it into the fitting, just as you would consider thick socks when trying on new shoes. Always discuss any additions with us to ensure they’re truly necessary and won’t compromise the fit.
Although we will stock a selection of girths, it’s a good idea to have your own available—even if it’s not the perfect match for a new saddle. It can help guide the fitting process and highlight any adjustments needed.
Bringing your own stirrup leathers is especially useful. Not only will they feel more familiar, but it also prevents marking of our new leathers. A little preparation goes a long way in making your fitting session smooth and tailored to you.
This is a practical step that helps us do our job thoroughly.
Clean coats allow the saddle to sit properly and, more importantly, reveal clear marks once the saddle is removed. These marks show whether it slips during movement. A clean coat supports a clearer, more informed fitting. It’s a simple step that makes a meaningful difference
